Guidelines for International Certification

www.CID-world.org/Certification

  1. Full data for each student

We need full data for each student, including:

–   Mr. or  Ms. for males or females.

–   We are not familiar with all foreign names. Write family name in capital letters. Given name(s) before family name(s). Full name as on identity card. Use only Roman alphabet (no accented letters).

–   Full postal address, email address, phone numbers (note if mobile phone).

–   Kind of dance, such as Ballet, Bharatanatyam, Ballroom, Bellydance etc. Use internationally accepted terms. Do not use other terms such as advanced, professional, intermediary etc.

–   Level is only a number: 1 or 2  or 3 …. A level corresponds to at least 150 hours of instruction. Level can be up to 10.

–  Year of birth (under 18 years of age membership fee is lower).

–  Data of minors will not appear online.

  1. Only one Certification in a year

even if the student has done more than 150 hours that year. A student can have two Certifications in a year if taught 150 hours in each of two forms of dance.

  1. Name of school

must be short, no more than four words. Official name only, no subtitles.

  1. Name of teacher

must be short, no more than four words. Two teachers’ names can be written on the parchment if both are CID Members and names are not too long.

  1. School requirements

The School Director can decide not to award Certification after completion of 150 hours, and ask students to pass an examination or follow additional classes.

  1.   Age of student

Student should be at least 7 years of age the day of the awarding ceremony. There is no maximum age.

  1. Same school

Certification means that the student has taken at least 150 hours of classes in the same school. All names on the parchment must be CID Members.

  1. Content of the 150 hours

They can include hours of class, training, performances, examinations, theoretical lectures (theory, Anatomy, Dance History etc.). The School Director can give credit for studies done outside the school (other forms of dance, university degrees, performance experience etc.). She can ask for more hours to obtain a Level, 150 hours is a minimum.

  1. Responsibility

Method and duration of instruction remains the responsibility of the School Director, who fills the form and sends to us.  We send documents to the Director, never to students.

  1. Program of teaching

There is no CID syllabus, every school has its own content of classes or of examinations. The School Director remains entirely responsible for the quality of instruction and the accuracy of information provided.

  1. Certifying a teacher

Procedure is the same: the teacher should ask her own teacher and school to certify her.

A teacher does not need to be certified in order to award Certification to students.

The number of Certifications a teacher gives is a good measure of the teacher’s value.

  1. Other qualifications

CID International Certification is not meant to replace other qualifications (diplomas, certificates, licenses etc.). It is awarded additionally to facilitate mobility. Other qualifications are of limited value since they are issued by private organizations.

  1. Certifying former students

You can certify students having left your school years ago – it will make them happy and might bring them back for another Level.

  1. The meaning of Certification

People often confuse Certification with giving a certificate. A certificate is document given by a school to its students. Certification is issued by a THIRD PARTY, that is an independent organization. It confirms or validates a fact declared by the school.

  1. Warning

Beware of private businesses disguised as international organizations awarding titles such as degrees, teacher diplomas, championships, certificates, competition prizes, tests etc. Such documents have no value outside their own small circle.

  1. Who can teach dance

Dance is an art, there are no restrictions on who can teach an art (fortunately!). Teaching dance is open to all, same as practicing dance. Teaching qualifications inform the public about a teacher, but they are not legally valid unless recognized by a government.

  1. Government recognition

CID is in touch with National Delegations at UNESCO and Ministries of Culture or Education regarding recognition of International Certification.

Teachers do not really need Certification

International Certification is meant to be offered to students. Students can become teachers after obtaining several Levels from a good school.

Students do not need any diploma to teach – in all countries there is no legislation about teaching dance, anyone can teach.

Most teachers awarding International Certification do not hold International Certification themselves.

A teacher is someone who has students. More students usually means a better teacher since many people trust him to teach them. Imagine a teacher with many diplomas and prizes but no students!

International Certification helps teachers attract more students, it shows they are serious about their profession.

Beware of organizations issuing qualifications to teachers or prizes at competitions! They are mostly commercial businesses in disguise, their documents have no value. Visit their offices to see for yourself. Ask us for the checklist to evaluate them.

Dance qualifications – a briefing

  1. Dance organizations belong to a particular country (anyone can use impressive titles like international, world, imperial, royal, confederation etc.). Their titles are ignored in other countries – usually they are ignored even in their own country.
  1. Dance organizations are private – would you buy a diploma from a supermarket?
  1. They make profit by charging for examiners, manuals, music, classes etc.
  1. Examiners are never appointed by an independent body, they not impartial. They usually pass every contestant.
  1. Qualifications (diplomas, licenses, prizes, championships) are issued by the same establishment that benefits from preparing contestants.
  1. All qualifications are restricted to a single form of dance, they are unknown outside it.
  1. Ask a government agency or a lawyer if a qualification has legal value.

Certification procedure

www.CID-world.org/certification

  1. Standardization in this case concerns the duration of instruction by organizing it in modules of 150 hours (for example: 1 year at 5 hours a week, or 2 years at two and a half hours a week).
  1. The school, the teacher and the students are Members of CID. This guarantees higher quality, since profiles of teachers and schools are evaluated before entering the CID.
  1. The school sends a statement to the CID Secretariat listing students having completed the module. The statement includes: name of school, name of teacher, name of student, type of dance and level of module.
  1. The CID Secretariat sends to the school a formal certificate on parchment paper. Certificates are difficult to forge since they bear the CID logo, the stamp of CID and the signature of its President. For additional security certified students can be confirmed by the CID Secretariat upon request and featured online at the CID portal.
  1. Certificates are handed to the students at a special ceremony. This highlights the value of International Certification and enhances the motivation of other students to complete their studies. If possible, an official from CID or from the local government is invited to hand the parchments at the ceremony.
  1. The student can continue for a higher level: Tango 2, Ballroom dance 2, or Ballet 3.
  1. Exactly the same system applies to all countries, all forms of dance, all levels. Uniformity and simplicity ensure easy recognition all over the world. There cannot be adaptation to local conditions.
  1. CID Certification does not concern the content of instruction – the school and the teacher remain responsible for it. Certification concerns the quantity of hours taught in a specific school by a specific teacher. It is in fact a validation of the facts declared by the school.

Fees:

Teacher’s membership fee                  $80 US

School’s membership fee                       $160 US

Youth (under 18) membership fee            $45 US

Student (18 or over) membership fee            $80 US

A student becomes a Member of CID if you nominate him/her.

When student finishes 150 hours, you notify the CID Secretariat to send Certification parchment.

If studies require a second module of 150 hours, procedure is repeated.

There is no cost for Certification itself, only membership fees.

Ideas for the awarding ceremony

of International Certification

www.CID-world.org/certification

It is special day for every student/dancer – make it unforgettable.

Here is a list of ideas that have been tried successfully.

  1. Performance

Combine with a performance, before or after the awarding ceremony. It can be a common performance where several schools perform one after the other. The local Section of CID can organize it and print a commemorative program.

Otherwise, ask the mayor of the city to hand Certification parchments at a ceremony in the town hall.

  1. Audience

Invite students, parents, friends, journalists, former students of your school, other schools, important artists, local authorities.

  1. Guests of honor

Invite one or more personalities to hand certificates, such as the mayor, a well-known ballarina, an official of CID.

  1. Recording

Take video, upload it at YouTube, or have a professional take video and photos to sell as souvenir.

  1. Social media

Promote in advance through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube etc. Make a page in your school’s website with texts, photos, video, names of students.

  1. The press

Write an article for publication by a magazine or a newspaper. Ask a journalist to write an article with you, presenting the advantages of International Certification. Invite a TV or radio station to produce a program.

  1. Florist

Find a florist who will give discount prices for parents who want to offer a bouquet to their child.

  1. Facebook

Post photos and videos of your event at

www.facebook.com/groups/CID.InternationalCertification

  1. The International Certification of Dance Studies is a world-wide program of the International Dance Council CID. It is a validation of instruction at schools that are members of the CID.
  1. The Certification parchment is the same for all forms of dance, all levels, all countries. A level corresponds to 150 hours of classes in one kind of dance. The school, the teacher and the students must be members of the CID. After Level 1 the student can continue towards Level 2, Level 3 etc.
  1. International Certification is called “the dancer’s passport” as it allows the student to go to another country and prove that he/she has followed classes in a particular form of dance at a particular school.

Safety measures for International Certification

www.CID-world.org/certification

This document is very important, we take measures to ensure it is difficult to forge it, to copy it, or for someone to claim falsely that he has it.

  1. It is printed on special parchment paper
  2. Names of recipients are listed online so everyone can check
  3. The School Director can confirm if a person has attended the school
  4. The CID Secretariat replies to inquiries in case of doubt.
